The Zuidplein shopping center, opened in 1972, is a large covered shopping center in Rotterdam South and has more than 150 stores. The shopping area is located on the first floor. On the ground floor, there is a large two-level parking garage, a bicycle parking facility, storage space, and a bus station. Between 1993 and 1995, the center was expanded, and between 1999 and 2003, the interior was renovated. In early 2023, a thorough two-year renovation aimed at improving the experience and the quality of the stay was completed. During these last renovations, all fixtures for lighting the entrances, passages, and squares were equipped with energy-efficient LED lamps.

To emphasize the length of the staircase, the lighting is supported by poles that gradually decrease in size towards the top. This gesture, much like the narrowing staircase, enhances the perspective and gives the illusion of an even longer staircase.

Station Lelylaan was completed in 1986 and serves as a prime example of an elevated station. The station has garnered a poor reputation in terms of social safety, quality of stay, and orientation. Hence, a competition was held for the northern side of the underpass with the goal of improving the sense of safety and the quality of stay. With our winning design, we playfully address the issues in the area by using the visual language of a pinball machine that occasionally goes into “tilt” mode. The installation of this lighting not only enhances the feeling of safety but also adds a playful character to the area.

The boulevard of Eindhoven Airport serves as the front area of the airport and was designed by MTD. While primarily designed as a circulation area, it also incorporates green spaces and small leisure areas. Additionally, various facilities, such as taxi stands and the Multi-Purpose Building (MPB) with parking and a bus stop, are situated in and around the area. In designing the public lighting, a strong axis, indicative of the separation between the land and air sides, was created using 10m-high poles as the main functional lighting carriers. At the top of these poles, an LED strip is installed, with the light being controllable in small segments. Due to the perspective along the length of the boulevard, all these LED strips together form a low-resolution display. This display showcases, among other things, the flags of the destinations. Scattered throughout the boulevard are smaller leisure areas, ideal for waiting or meeting, illuminated by notably smaller poles to impart an intimate character. The covered taxi stands also feature integrated dynamic LED lighting. By integrating LED strips into the structure of these canopies and the local ground, a tunnel of light is created, displaying various moving light effects and patterns to enhance the waiting experience for taxis. Additionally, green elements in various locations are accentuated by ground lights, serving as decorative elements for the area.

On the southern banks of the Hollandsche IJssel, near Gouda, lies the grounds of GOUDasfalt, situated on the former Koudasfaltcentrale KWS site. The factory was shut down in 2013 and dismantled in 2016. Nearly the entire facility was removed during the demolition, except for a few buildings, two sand hoppers, a conveyor belt, and a pivoting arm known as the ‘Lange Arm’. Since 2016, the area has been transformed into a robust and vibrant urban waterfront, hosting various artisanal businesses, a city beach with dining options, sports, yoga, and scouting activities. The site is also utilized for numerous events. The ‘Lange Arm’ serves as a distinctive feature of the terrain. Within the site itself, it acts as the connecting element. Wherever you are, the ‘Lange Arm’ serves as a reminder of the history of this place. It is a splendid object that deserves to be illuminated down to its finest details.

Thrice we encounter the ‘Wensfabriek’ during GLOW 2023. This time, the venue is not the Paterskerk (2021) or the Gasfabriek (2017) but the Catharinakerk, serving as the beating heart of the light festival. Amidst the city’s hustle and bustle, the GLOW route, and the day’s frenzy, this spot provides tranquility and space for reflection. It’s the perfect setting for a simple and beautiful ritual you might be familiar with: lighting a candle for yourself, or someone else. Typically done in silence, with the wish repeated in your mind, you wouldn’t often express it aloud or write it out extensively, let alone see it inscribed on the walls. During the Wensfabriek, you have the opportunity to magnify your wish – in anonymity – and project it prominently onto the old vaults and walls of the Catharinakerk. With a history dating back to 1867, the church holds hundreds of thousands of (silent) wishes, adding a special dimension to your visit.

On a construction site at Grote Berg, used lighting fixtures are arranged in a manner reminiscent of a symphonic orchestra with choir and soloists. The “orchestra with singers” performs Mozart’s Requiem, where the light from each fixture is synchronized with the corresponding score of the respective instrument or singer. In this arrangement, pitch is translated into light color, and sound intensity determines light intensity. The musical piece could be heard on-site through a stereo sound system. The composition is curated by Rot8ion (Rob van Rooij). The entire installation serves as a tribute to all fixtures for their faithful service.

The Wilhelminaberg, symbolizing the transformation from old mining industry to a sustainable, robust leisure economy, serves as the perfect setting for a dialogue on the future design and layout of the region. By day, the Wilhelminaberg stands as a visual beacon in Parkstad. The addition of a light sculpture turns this ‘Mountain of Light’ into a spectacle visible from afar in the darkness. Especially in the evening, the realm of imagination, an atmosphere is created for the birth and exchange of ideas; the plateau on the mountain aims to become a contemporary agora (gathering place) for sharing new existential perspectives. At the top of the Wilhelminaberg, closer to the heavens, visitors become more contemplative and receptive to the new. Around the asphalted seating pit, 12 steel columns are positioned. Each of these 12-meter-high masts integrates a laser projector at heights of 4 and 10 meters within the column. These laser projectors can scan their light onto a mast centrally positioned in the circle and onto the opposite columns. Along the path that borders the elevated plateau, 12 columns are placed, each with a laser projector directing its beam onto some columns arranged in the circle. In contrast to the peripheral columns, simple standard tube profiles, those forming the circle are designed to resemble the characteristic shape of a headframe. By programming a central control, a choreography of moving green light lines and planes can be realized. This light display is fully synchronized with music accessible on the website www.bergvanlicht.nl or www.bergvanlicht.com.

In a time when a virus dominated our daily lives, we primarily know these particles by their harsh-sounding abbreviations and other names. However, delving deeper into microbiology reveals that these particles come in a wide range of fascinating forms. Since not everyone has a microscope and contrast fluid at home, we attempt to provide an impression here of various shapes, textures, and colors. In short, we introduce a selection of (harmless) new variants to you. These new mutants are magnified to such an extent that we can experience them in all their beauty. The artwork was exhibited in Soest (Germany) during the “5. Nacht der Lichtkunst, Hellweg – ein Lichtweg” and during GLOW 2021 in Eindhoven (The collection of mutants was created in collaboration with students from the student association SSRE in Eindhoven).
